ChatGPT Pro 20x: why the $200 plan was paused, and what changed since
Quick answer: as of October 22, 2026, ChatGPT Pro 20x (Pro 200) is available again at $200/month, with a lower allowance for new subscribers.
ChatGPT Pro 20x is the $200 per month tier of ChatGPT Pro, which OpenAI now calls Pro 200. In September 2026 OpenAI stopped selling it to new subscribers because GPT-6 Astra demand outran capacity, and the pricing page offered only the 5x plan at about $100 per month. People who already had 20x kept it. Since then the plan has come back with a smaller allowance. This page covers what happened, what OpenAI’s own pages say today, how Plus, 5x and 20x compare, and how Codex credits fit in. (Searching for “ChatGPT 20x” or “Codex 20x”? Both mean this same Pro 200 plan.)
The short answer (what the video covers)
- What paused: new subscriptions and upgrades to Pro 20x ($200/month). Only the 5x plan (about $100/month) could be bought.
- Existing 20x users: kept access. OpenAI said there was no impact on existing users.
- Why: demand for GPT-6 Astra. People were using up the $200 plan so fast that OpenAI stopped new sign-ups while it added capacity.
- For how long: then, unknown. The wording was that new Pro subscriptions might be paused “for a bit.” Now, it’s back for new subscribers, per OpenAI’s help center (October 22, 2026).
Why OpenAI paused it
I moved from Plus, which I’d used for about a year and a half, to Pro because Plus wasn’t enough for what I wanted to do with GPT-6 Astra. On Plus my credits were gone in about 5 to 10 minutes of Astra. Even on Pro I used up my plan in about 5 hours. Astra uses credits faster than any model I’ve tried.
The OpenAI person who handles usage credit resets (Tibo on X) posted that demand for Astra was unprecedented. OpenAI was pulling every lever it could. Existing users came first, so it might have to pause new Pro subscriptions for a bit. In the video, that tweet showed 8.2 million views. A post by Jeff Hunter on Facebook also reported the pause. He wrote that he spent about $1,200 across all his subscriptions to run 50+ agents a day, and he estimated the same work would cost about $3,000 a day on Claude Fable.
The September 2026 timeline
As reported in Jeff Hunter’s Facebook post shown in the video (not confirmed by OpenAI, with dates as he gave them). He published the same timeline in his write-up on the pause:
- September 3: Astra launched as a restricted preview. Paying subscribers saw the announcement but couldn’t use the model yet.
- September 4: Sam Altman reportedly said Pro, Enterprise and Business Premium had access. Plus users were told he hoped they’d get it that weekend, but it wasn’t promised.
- September 5: OpenAI started giving subscribers one banked usage reset for each day they went without Astra.
- September 7: a global usage reset. One developer used up the whole $200 plan in about 12 hours.
- September 10: the $200 Pro plan was paused for new subscribers, at least for a while.
ChatGPT Pro 20x vs 5x vs Plus
Here are the three personal plans most people compare, using OpenAI’s current pages for price and the video for message windows:
| Plan | Monthly price (OpenAI) | GPT-6 Astra in Codex (OpenAI) | Messages per 5-hour window (video, Sept 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plus | $20 | “5-45” local messages per 5 hours. “limited GPT-6 Astra usage, with the option to purchase credits” | about 5 to 45 |
| Pro 100 (5x) | $100 | “included within the existing Codex usage allowance” | about 25 to 225 |
| Pro 200 (20x) | $200 | “included within the existing Codex usage allowance.” New subscribers get “a lower usage allowance” | about 100 to 900 |
If you use up 20x in 5 hours, you’re pushing the model very hard. That’s the kind of use the video says led OpenAI to stop selling the plan. Back then I found the 5x plan generous, and I like ChatGPT plans more than Claude’s because OpenAI has been more generous with usage resets. So is 20x worth it over 5x? In the video I said I was unsure an extra $100 a month was worth it for my work. With a lower allowance for new subscribers, compare your own usage dashboard before upgrading.
Codex limits and credits on Pro 20x, 5x and Plus
If you mainly use Codex (the “Codex 20x” question), what matters is how much coding work you get before you hit a limit. OpenAI’s Codex pricing page says “Local messages and cloud chats share your plan’s usage allowance. Weekly limits may also apply.” So the 5-hour window isn’t the only cap.
When you run out, credits are the next step. In OpenAI’s words, “Credits let you use Codex beyond the usage included in your plan. Credit usage varies by model and task.” The Pro tiers page adds that “Included usage is used first, followed by your credit balance.” You can check your balance in Settings → Usage in ChatGPT, or Usage & Billing in Codex. In the CLI, /status shows your remaining limits during a session. Support can’t reset limits for you.
Two settings change how fast you burn through usage. Per the same docs, Fast mode uses your included allowance at 2.5x the Standard rate (2x when it draws on purchased credits), and Ultrafast, only on Pro 500, uses it at 8x (6x on credits). On Plus, Astra is limited and credits are how you get more. Credits are charged per token. At Standard speed, OpenAI lists GPT-6 Astra at “250 credits” per million input tokens and “1,250 credits” per million output tokens, against 50 and 250 for GPT-6.1 Sol (ChatGPT Learn: Pricing, read October 22, 2026). That’s why Astra drains credits so fast, and why moving routine tasks to a cheaper model makes them last. The page says the price you pay for credits depends on your plan, so I don’t list a dollar figure.
The video also covers usage resets. The OpenAI person who handles them (Tibo on X) has been generous with them, including for Codex. For a walkthrough of raising Codex limits, watch Here’s How To 10X Your Credit Limit On Codex!
Make your credits last: use medium effort
Pick the reasoning effort yourself. In Codex I use medium:
- Medium: the best balance for most work, including agentic coding, research and multi-step tasks.
- High: for hard debugging or long tasks.
- Extra high and max: avoid them for routine work. You get less back for the extra effort and the model tends to over-engineer. Save them for audit-level tasks or for failures that lower levels can’t fix.
For how I split work between coding agents when one hits a limit, see Claude Code vs Codex. For more on Codex credits, watch Here’s How To 10X Your Credit Limit On Codex!

0:00 We have more news coming out of Open AI after the recent release of their most powerful model to date reaching AGI levels of intelligence, GPT-6 Astra. I've actually had the opportunity to start playing around with this model a lot more because I've upgraded to the pro subscription. I've been on plus for probably about a year and a half now, and I just wasn't able to get the things done that I wanted to get done with Astra 6. So, I decided to up grade to
0:30 their pro plan. But, you'll notice here that they no longer have the 20X plan. It's only the 5X plan at about $100 per month, and that is because they've decided to pause the $200 per month pro 20X plan. So, if you already are a subscriber of that plan, you will continue to have access, but if you're on one of the lower-tier models like I am, the 5X plan, then you will no longer be able to upgrade to the pro max plan. And they've done this specifically
1:01 because the demand is so incredibly high for Astra 6. People are blowing through their credits so quickly on the $200 per month plan that they've just decided to cut them off, and now you only have access to the pro plan. I'm not exactly sure how long they're going to limit access. Hopefully, they'll decide to open it back up again. It says there's no impact to existing users, and they're currently working to add more capacity as fast as they can. He's also made
1:29 another tweet over here. Says, "Demand for Astra is really unprecedented. They've been pulling all of the levers possible to sustain the demand. They haven't seen anything like it up until this point. So, the priority will always be kept excellent for existing users, but they might have to pause new pro subscriptions for a bit if this continues." So, it says for a bit. So, potentially, this is going to once they get more capacity, they will open it
1:54 back up again. This tweet currently has 8.2 million views, and this is the same guy that is in charge of rolling out the usage credits. That's one of the reasons that I really, really like the Chat GPT subscriptions compared to Claude is because they're just a lot more generous in terms of the credit usage resets that they give out, and I'm currently waiting on another one to hit because I've already burned through my pro subscription plan in about 5 hours
2:25 using Astra 6. I've been able to get some really, really amazing things done on my existing projects, but it does eat through the credits faster than any other model I've experienced so far. I also have a post over here by Jeff Hunter. He's very, very well known in the AI space, and this is over on Facebook. He goes on to say that OpenAI has paused new subscriptions to the $200 per month plan. This guy, he posted a full
2:51 breakdown of why he canceled one of his pro max subscriptions and shifted the daily workload to Chat GPT and Grok. He was spending about $1,200 across all the subscriptions, 50-plus agents running daily, and that would have been about $3,000 a day if he had used Claude Fable for what he currently does for his existing subscriptions. 24 hours later, OpenAI decided to pause the plan he was on. That's the pro max plan I've been
3:18 talking about. And here's the timeline of the last 7 days. So, basically, September 3rd, Astra launched as a restricted preview. Paying subscribers saw the announcement but couldn't actually access the model. Then, on September 4th, Altman Sam Altman says, "Pro enterprise and business premium have access." Plus users are told, "I'm hopeful you could get this weekend," but they couldn't actually promise. I was waiting a bit longer than the pro
3:45 subscription users in order to get access because I was still on the plus plan at the time. And then, September 5th, OpenAI started giving subscribers one banked usage reset for every day they went without Astra access. So, and then September 7th, global usage reset, one developer burned through the entire $200 per month plan in about 12 hours. And September 10th, the Pro $200 subscription plans were paused entirely, at least for a limited time. This is the
4:14 most expensive consumer AI plan on the market, and they had to stop selling it because the infrastructure couldn't serve what they shipped. He actually has a breakdown here of the 5-hour message windows for each of the plans. So, for the Plus plan, you only get about 5 to 45 messages. And then on Pro $100 a month, you get 25 to 225 messages. And on Pro Max, essentially, that is 100 and 900 messages. So, if you ever to blow through all of those in about 5 hours,
4:44 you are just going too hard with the model, and that's why they decided to cut off the $200 per month plan. So, it should be interesting to see how this all plays out. I would recommend just checking in with Tibo every so often on X if you want any updates regarding the any of this stuff. So, yeah, in the meantime, you will no longer be able to get access to the Pro Max plan. They only have the 5X plan, which is still very, very generous in
5:10 terms of the amount of credits that they give you. And I was noticing that I was blowing through credits so quickly on Astra 6 on Plus just in about 5 to 10 minutes, all my credits were gone. If you are using GPT-6 Astra on a regular basis, just know that it doesn't have an optimum mode, but I would recommend just setting it on to medium. In most cases, that's recommended for agentic coding, research, and complex multi-step tasks. You can also bump it up to high,
5:38 typically reserved for difficult debugging or long horizon work. And then, obviously, extra high and max is generally discouraged for routine use as they suffer from diminishing returns and over engineering. These levels are best reserved for audit-grade tasks or when explicit failures at lower levels cannot be resolved. So, for most users medium effort offers the optimal trade-off between capability and resource consumption. That's typically what I use
6:09 over here inside Codex. I'll just switch it into medium mode and that way you get the best balance of both worlds and that will ultimately help you to, you know, not blow through all their all of your credits really quickly. I was actually considering upgrading to the $200 per month plan. I wasn't really sure if it was going to be useful enough to to rationalize spending an extra $100 per month. But luckily, I do have the pro plan now. They haven't shut off access
6:39 to pro. But potentially, who knows? They may decide to disable this one at some point. I don't see that happening anytime soon. And if you do want any information on this stuff, just go ahead and follow Tibo on X. He's also in charge of giving out the generous usage credit resets on on Codex as well. And I'm hoping to get another one here relatively soon as well. Currently, I don't have any available, but there
7:06 should be more coming soon. So, stay tuned for updates. Thank you so much watch this video. Please go ahead subscribe to the channel if you haven't already and I will see you in the next one. Take care, stay safe. Peace from Thailand. Signing off.
FAQ
Why was ChatGPT Pro 20x paused?
In September 2026, demand for GPT-6 Astra outran OpenAI’s capacity, so it paused new sign-ups to the $200 plan.
I already pay for Pro 20x. Do I lose it?
No. Existing subscribers kept access when sales were paused in September 2026. As of October 22, 2026, OpenAI’s help center says eligible existing Pro 200 subscribers keep the previous included allowance through October 29, 2026, then move to the lower allowance. The $200 price stays the same.
Which Pro plan could you still buy?
During the September 2026 pause, the 5x plan at about $100 per month. People on Plus or Pro 5x could no longer upgrade to 20x.
How many messages does each plan get?
In September 2026, per the video, each 5-hour window gave Plus about 5 to 45 messages, Pro $100 about 25 to 225, and Pro 20x about 100 to 900. OpenAI’s pricing docs now say “Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit,” though weekly limits may apply.
Is ChatGPT Pro 20x available again?
Yes. As of October 22, 2026, OpenAI’s help center says Pro 200 is available for new subscriptions again at $200 a month. New subscribers who don’t qualify for grandfathering get a lower usage allowance than before. When I recorded the video on September 11, nobody knew how long the pause would last.
How do Codex credits work?
Your plan’s included usage is used first, then your credit balance. Credits cover eligible Codex usage beyond your plan, and how fast they go depends on the model and task. Plus has limited GPT-6 Astra usage in Codex and can buy credits for more. Check your balance under Settings → Usage, or with /status in the CLI.
How do I make my credits last longer?
Use medium reasoning effort for most work. Save high for hard debugging, and avoid extra high and max for routine tasks.
